The South County Kiwanis Club is responsible for or assists with several on-going events including:
Reading Is Fun. During the school year we purchase books and take them to the Lemay Early Childhood Center. With help from Key Club members, we read the books to the children. Each child receives a book to take home.
Kids’ Kiwanis Korner Libraries. Working in conjunction with a school librarian, we purchase books that are placed in all eleven Mehlville elementary schools. The fiction and non-fiction books are chosen to include a wide range of reading levels and age groups, as well as to support the diversity of students’ life experiences, family backgrounds, interests, etc. Books are selected to support social-emotional learning curricula being used in the elementary schools.
Honoring First Responders. Every quarter we honor either a police officer or a firefighter by inviting them to a meeting and presenting them with a certificate of recognition and a gift card thanking them for their service.
Ronald McDonald House. Once a year we purchase the food and prepare a dinner that is served at the Ronald McDonald House for the parents of children who are patients at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
Fisher House. Once a year we purchase the food and prepare a dinner that is served at Fisher House for the families of veterans who are patients at Jefferson Barracks Veterans’ Hospital.
60+ BBQ. Mehlville School District invites senior citizens to a BBQ at one of the schools each spring. Our members purchase the hamburger meat and cook it for the attendees.
